Wow! I feel like there is so much to say when it comes to
sweet Rosalie’s birth story, so hopefully I will be able to remember it
all. I am going to break it down into
two parts because I normally make things really wordy, and I feel like it is
just too long for one post.
I went in for an ultrasound on Monday morning to see how
Rosalie was growing and also to check her amniotic fluid levels. The ultrasound
showed that her fluid levels were fine, but that she was measuring even smaller
than she had in the past. She was now
measuring 3 weeks small and she was in the 3rd percentile. The
ultrasound tech showed this information to my doctor, and he told me that it
would be best to take the baby now. He explained to me that the placenta wasn’t
giving her the nutrients that she needed and this was why she wasn’t growing. I
was in shock when he said this because I honestly never thought that I would be
induced. I was then in even more shock when he said that I was going to be
induced that night!
I had spent the last 9 months dreaming about meeting my
sweet baby girl, and suddenly I wasn’t sure if I was ready. My sister was with
me for my appointment so she knew right away, and then I called Chanse to tell
him the news. However, he didn’t have service in his class, so I had to
patiently wait for him to call me back. I then called my mom to tell her that
she and my dad needed to come out that day, and she was so excited!
My doctor had told me that I was going to receive a call
from the hospital to tell me when I needed to come in that evening, and that I
should call them if I hadn’t heard anything by 6 pm. Needless to say, my day
was a very long one. I already had my baby bag ready, the carseat ready, and my
own bag was packed and ready to go. I spent the day cleaning my house again,
and doing some stuff for work. When Chanse called me I told him the good news,
and he was thrilled and somewhat shocked. He ended up coming home early because
he just couldn’t focus at school. We talked all day about how excited we were
to meet her, and how we couldn’t believe that this was our last day at home
before we were going to be parents.
We waited all day, and my parents arrived at about 5:45 pm.
I hadn’t heard from the hospital yet, so I called at 6 to see when they wanted
me to come in. I was told that they were ready for me now, and I could come
right in. My heart started to beat out of my chest at this point because I was
so nervous! I had no idea what to expect from labor, and the unknown just
really scared me. Chanse was as sweet as can be though, and he helped to calm my
nerves. He really is the best, and I don’t know what I would do without him!
My mom, sister, and dad waited at my house while Chanse and
I drove to the hospital to get checked in. I was told by the doctor that this
could be a very long process because I was being induced and it was my first
baby, so it would likely take my body a while to react to the Pitocen. I told
my mom that I would call her and have them come as soon as we were ready
because I didn’t want them to have to spend a bunch of time just sitting at the
hospital and waiting.
We were checked into the hospital pretty quickly, and I was
taken to my room. The nurse came in soon after that, and she asked me how
dilated and effaced I had been at my appointment that morning. I told her that
I was 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. She then told me that they would start by
placing some small pills (I’m sorry I don’t remember what they are called) up in
my cervix to soften it. She said that one would be placed every 3 hours, and
then after this they were going to start me on the Pitocen. Chanse and I asked
how long it would likely take for the baby to come, and our nurse told us that
it would be anywhere from 8 to 24 hours after she had started the Pitocen. With
this news we were ready to settle in and prepare for a long night.
However, this is when things started going much different
than we had expected. The nurse checked me to see how far along I was, and she
was surprised to see that I was dilated more than a 2, and was more than 70%
effaced. She also told me that I was
having contractions on my own, and asked if I had been having these at home. I
told her that I had, but that I had never been sure if they were Braxton Hicks
or not. She then left to talk to the doctor. She came back to tell me that I
was going to be able to start on the Pitocen right away, because I was further
along than they had thought. I was surprised, but so glad to bypass the pills
in my cervix that would’ve taken several hours.
My last maternity picture :) 38 Weeks and 3 Days
We were pretty excited to meet our little girl :)
Stay tuned for the other half of the story :)
